As a company they have been keen supporters of the club for some time now and have decided to take their involvement with us to another level."

Northern Rock will continue with its shirt sponsorship of Newcastle United. The bank’s current deal with the club runs until 2010, but executive chairman Ron Sandler said there were no plans to ditch the contract, despite the deal effectively involving taxpayers’ money.

Northern Rock refused to comment on the value of the current sponsorship, signed in 2005, although Newcastle United’s commercial revenues of £25.7m (€32.2m) in the 11 months to June 30 2006 were "enhanced by the impact of improved deals with the club’s two main sponsors Adidas and Northern Rock", according to the club’s annual report.

Northern Rock will also continue its sponsorship of rugby team Newcastle Falcons although it is axing deals with county cricket clubs Middlesex and Durham, Mr Sandler said.

Northern Rock executive chairman Ron Sandler told MPs that it was in the bank's interest to continue with the sponsorships.

"We have already ended a number of sponsorships that I inherited," he said.

"But we have chosen to continue the sponsorship of Newcastle United and Newcastle Falcons, partly because of commitments we have entered into there — sometimes sponsorships continue until they come to a contractual end — and partly because I believe it is in the commercial interest of the bank that we should continue with both of these."

Ipswich Town Football Club is proud to announce that the Marcus Evans Group will be the Club's official sponsor for the next five years. The sponsorship contract is the longest in the Club's history and will see the Marcus Evans name emblazoned on the Ipswich Town shirt until the summer of 2013.

The multi-million pound deal further strengthens Marcus Evans's long-term commitment to Ipswich Town and provides additional revenue for the Club on top of initial investment made by the British entrepreneur.

"The Marcus Evans Group is a highly successful international business to business information company with interests including conferences, summits, sports hospitality and business training.

It operates in 65 countries worldwide and is consistently increasing its global reach year on year," says Marcus Evans Group spokesperson, Martin Pitcher.

"Ipswich Town's ambition is to establish itself back in the top flight of English football and achieve long term success in the Premier League.

"The world wide media coverage that comes with playing in the Premier League and which football attracts in general, provides an ideal platform to further develop awareness of the Marcus Evans brand to an international audience.

Comms Direct, Cardiff City's shirt sponsor was offered an incredible half-a-million pound deal to give up their advertising rights for the FA Cup final.

But executives at CommsDirect declined the offer from an Asian-based online gambling venture in favour of taking advantage of a "once in a century" opportunity to have global television exposure when Cardiff play Portsmouth at Wembley. The broker offered £500,000 to have its clients’ name emblazoned on Cardiff City’s black strip for the FA Cup instead of CommsDirect.

Football fans in more than 200 countries, generating a global audience of more than 500 million, will view tomorrow’s match.

Matt Burge, managing director of CommsDirect, said: "On the Wednesday after Cardiff’s FA semi-final win at Wembley we were contacted by a sports marketing agency representing an undisclosed online gambling business based in Asia.

"The offer of £500,000 was tempting, but after discussing it with our board and then with Cardiff City we decided to reject it.
