Partick Thistle and Greaves Sports today launched the club’s new centenary strip made by Puma, 100 years to the day since the Jags’ first ever game at Firhill.

The commemorative and limited edition strip will be worn for the first time by Thistle this Saturday during the league match against Dunfermline at Firhill. To celebrate the occasion the club is hosting a gala family day at the ground from 11am and will also provide the first 100 visitors to the Aitken Suite before kick-off with a free drink of their choice.

Jags captain Alan Archibald, a product of the club’s youth system and currently enjoying his testimonial season, was joined by Northern Ireland international goalkeeper Jonny Tuffey, who will celebrate his own centenary on Saturday by making his 100th start for the club, to model the new traditional-style dark blue strip.

Archibald said: “Partick Thistle has a proud football heritage in this city and this strip, which the players have really taken to, is a great way of marking 100 years at Firhill.”

Thistle’s first ever match at Firhill was a 3-1 victory against Dumbarton Harp on September 18, 1909. One hundred years and one day later, the 2009/10 first team will wear the centenary strip, which went on sale at Greaves Sports today and will be available at the Firhill club shop tomorrow from 1pm prior to the match.

Sandy Greaves, managing director of Greaves Sports, said: “We were delighted to be able to help Partick Thistle celebrate this landmark occasion and we’ve had great feedback from supporters about the strip since it went on sale this morning.”

From 11am on Saturday at Firhill there will be a number of events, aimed primarily at families, taking place in the car park outside the Jackie Husband Stand, including: a chance to meet Real Radio’s Cat Harvey, photo opportunities with current Thistle players including the 1971 League Cup winning squad and with Maryhill fire station, street rugby from Glasgow Warriors and a mini football tournament involving four local primary schools. A coffee stall will be run by Macmillan Cancer Relief with all proceeds going to the charity.

Allan Cowan, Partick Thistle chairman, added: “This is a proud day for the club and the centenary strip will only add to the sense of special occasion tomorrow.”
